Coconut Water Induces Clinical Remission in Mild to Moderate Ulcerative Colitis: Double-blind Placebo-controlled Trial

September 2019 to April 2022

This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of coconut water as an adjunct to standard medical therapy in patients with mild to moderate ulcerative colitis. It was a single-center, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Of 121 patients screened, 95 were included in the modified intention-to-treat analysis (coconut water, n = 49; placebo, n = 46). Eligible participants had mild to moderate endoscopically active ulcerative colitis. Participants received either 400 mL/day of coconut water plus standard medical therapy or placebo plus standard medical therapy for 8 weeks. The primary outcome was clinical remission, while secondary outcomes included clinical response and adverse events at 8 weeks. The study concluded that coconut water was more effective than placebo for inducing clinical remission in patients with mild to moderate ulcerative colitis.
