The database contains data from ongoing hospital-based diarrheal diseases surveillance conducted by ICMR-NIRBI at I.D. & B.G. Hospital (IDH), Kolkata. This surveillance includes systematic recruitment of diarrhea cases of all ages admitted in the hospital as mentioned. Every fifth patient admitted in the hospital with diarrhea is recruited from Monday to Saturday (except holidays) from 10 am to 6 pm throughout the year. The data are captured by trained doctors / nurses under the following heads: (a) Visit details, (b) Respondent information, (c) Patient identification information, (d) Demographic and socio-economic information, (e) Clinical history including pre- and post-admission treatment history, (f) Specimen collection and laboratory results information, and (g) Patient outcome. Stool specimen (whole stool or rectal swab) are collected by trained male/female staff and sent to ICMR-NIRBI laboratory within two hours for further processing and testing. The reports are regularly shared with the hospital authority as well as with municipal health officer and State Public Health Department. This database is also regularly accessed (with permission) by scientists of this institute for various research purposes.
The surveillance was suspended from March 14, 2020 due to COVID-19 related situation and resumed again since January 4, 2021.
